Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
