The defendant pleaded guilty to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

An individual who laced sweets with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two boys both nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and an older person experienced illness at the location in the summer month.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, pleaded guilty to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed a single sexual charge he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody ahead of a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, described the criminal behavior to the court.

She stated his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer camp which he managed.

The man engaged in a "treat game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "for many years", and minors had earlier experienced illness the following morning.

She stated Ruben had been capable of justifying this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The legal representative continued: "This year his stepchild had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained items including baby oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said the man went on to play the "candy game" with six children that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the family member contacted the police a second time.

She stated the defendant then conducted the "treat game" in a room of five minors.
