The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
