The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
